Indonesia -- Day 8 Jogjakarta / Yogyakarta and the Batik Factory

Jogjakarta / Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia

After we finished with the palaces in the morning we stopped at a Batik Factory.  I was so excited.  I absolutely love batik fabric and design. I have about 20 sarongs that I have worn since my first trip to Bali over 10 years ago.

The Plentong Batik Factory we stopped at.

Adventures Abroad has a strict no shopping policy but this Batik Factory was a great exception.  The women who work their are just amazing.  They start of with bleached cotton and then pencil on a design.  Sometimes they use a "stamp" to out on the design.

Batik design is a wax resist process.  Bees wax and sometimes tree resin among other ingredients make up the "wax" recipe.
You can see the intricate design of the flowers.

All the designers each "batiked" a piece of paper with a wax design.
It is gorgeous and amazing to see them just whip off a design in seconds.

Fabric retains the color of where ever the wax has been added.  The cloth with wax design is then dyed.  More design(s) can be added by adding more wax and dying again. This process is repeated until the design has been finished.
